Book Chat #1 and #2

Welcome to "Book Chat" for the Social Media Marketing Strategy (MKT 4100) class at HPU.  I hope that you are enjoying the Tuten and Solomon textbook on Social Media Marketing.  I picked this textbook after reviews from professionals that basically said, "if I had a textbook like this in college, I may have actually read it."  I've already learned a lot from this book and I hope you are too.  Please respond to the following questions based on the text in the comments section below:

Book Chat #1:  Tuten and Solomon, Chapters 1-3

There is no online "Book Chat" for chapters 1-3.  If you completed the in-class exercises on "The Zones of Social Media" and "Personal Social Media Audit," you will receive credit for completing the first book chat.  

Book Chat #2:  Tuten and Solomon, Chapter 4

Go to http://socilab.com/#home (or another site that does social graphs for your favorite social media site) and have it draw a social graph for your LinkedIn (or other social media site) network.  Please describe your social graph.  What do the hubs represent?  Who are some of the outliers?  Are these outliers valuable contacts for you?  Why or why not?


Search Twitter for hashtags related to a brand (e.g. #dunkindonuts).  What kids of influence impressions appear for the hashtag you searched?  Can you identify key influencers who are sharing tweets with this specific hashtag?  Why or why not?

  1. I created a social graph for my linked in. My hub was student’s at High Point University because students make up most of my connections. My outlier is one of my bosses from an internship I previously worked at and a few students I met while studying abroad in Barcelona. My former boss is definitely an important contact because she will be a great resource when I am looking for jobs in the future. While the students from abroad, are not as important because they are not from around here and I do not know them as well.

    On twitter in searched #starbucks, and most of the tweets I read were positive. Most tweets were from customers talking about how they had just got a coffee and it was just what they needed on a cold day. Some posted pictures of their favorite drinks, and few posted complaints of things they are not happy about. The main influencers for this specific hash tag were loyal customers who had a positive experience at Starbucks and wanted to share their story. It was easy to tell who were the influencers because they weren’t necessarily trying to sell you anything they just wanted to let everyone their story or share what they were happy about.

  2. For my social graph of my Linkedin account, my main hub was full of connects from HPU, both students and teachers. Some of those connections spread to the outer part of my hub as they were connections made from those in the HPU hub, but were still a valuable part of my network. The outliers were mainly people like family and friends who don't have any association with HPU and were just added to my network because I had a physical connection with them.

    The hashtag I searched was #nike and the tweets following that were mainly customers talking about the new products they bought or were planning to buy and how they were satisfied with their products. I couldn't identify key influencers because most of the tweets only had a few retweets, making them seem like they didn't have a great reach on twitter. I did, however, see a lot of shoe and clothing stores use the hashtag to identify the products to their immediate customers.

  3. My social graph is very crowded at my hub and has few outliers. My hub consists of mostly people from my hometown such as class mates, neighbors and parents of friends. My hub is from my hometown because I have the most connection there because I haven’t had enough jobs to have other connections. My outliers consist of co-workers from old jobs, which are beneficial to me because they made still be in contact with old co-workers from past jobs that may help me get my foot in the door of that old company.

    The hashtag I searched was #freepeople. Free people is a women clothing brand targeting fashionable women with a care free attitude and expensive taste. Most of the tweet that popped up were images of the clothing itself or stores promoting deals on the Free People brand. I think the major influencers for this hashtag are small boutiques who carry Free People, people with fashion blogs and Free People brand itself that want to get the word out on new clothing coming out.

  4. I created a social graph using my Facebook data, because I didn't have enough data on LinkedIn to answer the questions. My hubs were my high school and HPU. The outliers were people who I was friends with, but who weren't friends with any of my friends. They were people who I don't talk to often, if ever, so they would not be good contacts for me.

    The hashtag I searched was #disney, and the majority of the recent tweets were about the casting of Emma Watson as Belle in the upcoming live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. There were also quite a few tweets about Frozen/Let It Go and Elsa in general. There were only tourist blogs who were using the hashtag advertising tips for trips to Disney World or Disney Land.

  5. I created a social graph based off of my LinkedIn profile. I had two very crowded hubs and a few outliers. One of my hubs consisted of other HPU students and faculty, while the other hub consisted of employees from my summer internship. Both of my hubs were very densely populated. Also, I only had 4 outliers. Most of my outliers are people I have never met and are recruiters for companies I have no connection to. These outliers are not particularly useful contacts for me because I really have no personal connection to them. I would not feel comfortable contacting these people and they do not contribute to my network of contacts.

    The hashtag I searched was #nordstrom. Nordstrom is known for providing the highest level of customer service and delivering a reliable product. Most of the tweets I looked at were very positive customer service reviews or tweets relating to fashion. Also Nordstrom apparently recently topped some survey as the nations favorite fashion retailer. There were also I lot of tweets advertising products that could be purchased at Nordstrom. Also, Nordstrom corporate and individual Nordstrom stores tweet a lot about new products, upcoming promotions, events and customer reviews. There were also a lot of pictures included in peoples tweets about Nordstrom. Advertisers, satisfied customers and Nordstrom stores seem to be the key #hashtaggers.

  6. My social graph is based off of my LinkedIn account. My graph looks like one big ball of connections- everyone is connected to multiple other people. This is because I created this account while I was in college and have primarily connected with people just from college. I have no outliers, being from a small school, everyone knows everyone.

    I searched #budweiser. Almost all of the posts were talking about how amazing their newest commercial was and how it brought out an emotional response from all of those who watched it. The key influencers seemed to be their loyal customers and, particularly for this recent ad, young women. This is because the women felt a strong emotional pull towards this ad from the adorable puppy and the attractive man who lost his puppy.

  7. The social graph for my LinkedIn has four different hubs. The biggest of the hubs is my LinkedIn connects who attend or teach at High Point University. The second largest hub is not connected to any of the other hubs; it is made up of connections from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, as well as my family, as my mother works for the company as well. The third hub, which is connected to the High Point hub, consists of connections that I attended high school with. The final smallest hub is also connected to the High Point hub, and is made up of people who were also involved in the Massachusetts Association for Student Councils.
    The outliers consist of a girl I studied abroad with, my godfather, a woman I interviewed for a class project, and my current boss. I feel as though all the outlier contacts provide an important role in my life even if they are not connected to anyone else. My current boss could help me find another job, as could the woman I interviewed for a project.
    The hashtag I searched on twitter was #starbucks. A large number of tweets involved Disney and how they pulled a Starbucks mug from Epcot shelves because the mug featured the purple monorail, which had been retired after a fatal accident in previous years. Twitter users were also tweeting instagram photos of their morning beverage. One particular key influencer is @macbby11, whose tweet about being in a committed relationship with Starbucks was favorite 500 times. Other key influencers are difficult to find, as the hashtag is quite popular and is used by many users.

  8. I created a social graph based off my LinkedIn profile. My graph had two big very crowed hubs with a couple other sections of smaller hubs and a couple of outliers. One of my big hubs was all my connections of HPU students and the other big hub was people that I am connected with from back home in New Jersey. One of the smaller hubs was my connections from my past internships and jobs and the other one was just random people that I know that I am connected with. The outliers are just people that I have never met and most of them are recruiters from random companies that I really have no connection with. Most of my outliers are not valuable to me at all considering I really don't know who these people are. Even though I had two main hubs and then a few smaller ones and some outliers, it's crazy how in some way basically every one of my connections was connected in one way or another.

    The hashtag I searched was #bloomingdales. Bloomingdales is America's only nationwide, full-line, upscale, department store and is a division of Macy's. Bloomingdales is known for their exclusive and reliable products and the highest level of customer service. Most of the tweets I saw related to Bloomingdales were only about positive things like their amazing customer service or tweets that were related to fashion. There were a lot of tweets about products that people had purchased from Bloomingdales as well. Most of the things that Bloomingdales tweets about are events, sales and promotions that are going one and reviews from customers. They also include a bunch of pictures along with their tweets. The main influencers for Bloomingdales are the loyal customers who just want everyone to see what a great company and department store Bloomingdales is.

  9. For my social graph, I used my LinkedIn account. At first glance, I was overwhelmed with how many little dots were on my screen. As I scan over the graph, I notice the different clusters of connections. The largest cluster are my connections made through High Point University. These connections include fellow classmates, sorority sisters, professors, and my colleagues and bosses from my student employment. Another large cluster are connections made from my summer internship at Schleich. A smaller group of connections are from my church at home. The site mentioned it could only show you up to 500 contacts at a time. Since I only have 354 connections currently, I was able to see the entire scope of my connections. It appears I only have four outliers that are not currently mutually connected to any of my current connections. Two of the outliers appear to be in similar industries as me, one is a family member, and another is a family friend. I don’t believe they are strong valuable contacts for me because the networking opportunities are not as strong as they are compared to my other connections. From my 354 connections, it appears I have over 50,000 possible bridging opportunities. WOW! LinkedIn is one of my favorite social media networks and I am impressed with its abilities every day!

    On Twitter, I searched #target. The tweets I read were positive and showed how much Target customers enjoy shopping at their stores. Target is personally one of my favorite stores so I am happy to see so many people feel the same as I do about Target! I noticed how often tweets were being published with #target. After about ten minutes of reading through tweets, I had only scrolled through about an hour worth of tweets. It is shocking to me how brands are not considered “trending” as often as they are mentioned. I also noticed several spam accounts that advertised free Target gift cards. Consumers have to be conscious of the links they follow in case of spam or a virus. I am not sure how Target can go about trying to get rid of some of these false accounts other than reporting them to Twitter but no matter how many are taken down, more will be created. Through my search, I did not come across any key influencers who are sharing tweets with #target. Most celebrities or key influencers probably shop at more costly retail chains. Very few probably spend their days shopping around Target as I do.

  10. I made a social graph based off of my Linked In. My main hub was students at High Point University. This is because I have just recently made my Linked In so I have used it most to connect with people I have met here at school and teachers I have had. I did not have any outliers since most of the people I have connected with have also connected from people from HPU. All of them connect to one another, but I believe they are all good contacts to have to help me connect with other people for future jobs.

    On twitter I search the hashtag #dunkindonuts and many of the tweets were very positive and very similar. Many of the tweets were talking about the positives of getting a coffee like being on lunch break, enjoying a coffee in this cold weather, or just enjoying one of their delicious drinks. I scrolled down pretty far and only saw like 1 or 2 negative tweets both of them comparing dunkin donuts to other coffee companies. The main influencers of these tweets were loyal costumers who want to share their pleasant experiences with this coffee company and want to help promote their products.

  11. I chose to create a social graph for my LinkedIn account. My hub was greatly made up of High Point University students since they make up the largest percentile of my connections. Some of the outliers include relatives and previous bosses. I believe that these outliers are extremely valuable due to the “networking” phenomenon that has taken over our generation. It is through this particular group of contacts that I have had the most success thus far obtaining interviews and job inquiries. This group is also a key asset due to their experience in the industry that we as students lack. They are open to informational interviews in order to give us insight into the industry.

    On Twitter I searched #Escada, and all if not most of the tweets were positive. Escada is a luxury fashion brand that stands for “modern elegance, cool glamour, and sensual femininity”. Key influencers who were sharing tweets with this specific hashtag were proud customers sharing their new purchases and how they planned on wearing them. Another key influencer was magazines who publish what celebrities chose to wear to certain functions. Both of these are positive outlets in which Escada can gain exposure through word of mouth. Lastly, Escada’s personal Twitter page utilized the hashtag when tweeting about their company/products.

  12. Although it is fully not developed nor finished, I created my social graph using my LinkedIn account as well. Seeing that my LinkedIn is still fresh and I am still connecting to other users, it makes sense that my main hub is students at High Point University. Most of the connections I have already made include friends, family, and teachers from the past handful of years of education I have gone through. Like a few others I too did not have many outliers, however the few that exist are still connections that I see helpful as everything is networked within itself. I find it very important to analyze the social graph as a graphical representation is not at all hard to understand.

    On Twitter the hashtag I had searched was #Porsche. Porsche is a German automobile manufacturer specializing in high-performance sports cars and even more vehicles, and serves as a automobile brand that trends throughout multiple social media platforms. The results returned are almost all things automotive, and the majority of the tweets involve something Porsche-related. Prior to this search I was expecting the results it returned, but when I clicked the option for "All" tweets instead of "Top" tweets, the resulting tweets still encompass an automotive and Porsche culture.

  13. I made a social graph based off of my LinkedIn account. I really only have one main hub which is made up of people I know from High Point. This consists of students and faculty. Some of the outliers are family members and friends from home. A few of the outliers are people that I have worked with or for; these would be valuable contacts for me. They are good contacts for me because they are in the field that I want to be in when I graduate and could have contacts of their own that would be very valuable to me.

    On twitter I searched for #HighPointUniversity. Most of the posts using this hashtag were pretty positive. A lot of the key influencers who were posting and sharing tweets were prospective students. It looks like the majority of prospective students just received acceptance letters.

  14. I had also created a social graph using my LinkedIn account. I have one big cluster of people from High Point since that is my main source of connections. They consist of classmates and faculty. I pick and choose who I accept on LinkedIn so I do not have too many outliers. Although the outliers I do have are previous bosses and coworkers from internships. These are very important connections to have and keep in touch with. My past relationships from various jobs can help me network to grow in the business world.

    On twitter I seared for #Chipotle. The posts were pretty much positive and lets face it who doesn't like Chipotle. Celebrities like Hoodie Allen, Gabriel Iglesias, Lilly Singh, Randall Cobb and more! From YouTubers to Football players they are both huge influencers. People even make vine videos, one guy has 144 Chipotle receipts from 2014! I'd say in all the tweets about Chipotle are very positive.

  15. I created my social graph using my Facebook account. I had multiple big clusters from a lot of places that i moved growing up and schools that i went to. My main clusters are from my hometown and HPU. Unlike a Linkedin account i have many "friends" on Facebook who i don't talk to anymore or who were former boss's or teachers. So i had a few outliers because they didn't have the same friends as i do. Therefore i do not think these outliers would be valuable contacts for me to pursue.

    On my twitter account i searched #Starbucks and was surprised what i found. I expected to find celebrities and big time people commenting on the profile but instead it was pretty much all customers commenting on how their experiences were with the company. I think the influencers are the customers that visit the stores.

  16. Because I do not have much information on my LinkedIn account, I created a social graph using my Facebook account. I had two main clusters on my graph. The first cluster was my friends from back home. The second was people from HPU. The only outliers were friends of friends and people I have only met once. These outliers are no necessarily valuable to me today, but they could be in the future.

    I searched the #DollarShaveClub on Twitter. I was not surprised to find that the conversation was overwhelmingly positive. The majority of the tweets were talking about the quality of the product. Those that were not about the product commented mainly on the viral marketing campaigns. Youtube personalities seemed to be the main group of key influencers that were driving conversation. They accomplish this through referral links and promo videos.

  17. I created my social graph based on my LinkedIn account. My hub consists of mainly HPU students and faculty that are also connected with each other. Also there is a rim of outliers and smaller clusters outside of my High Point University connections. Although these are outliers they are still important, relevant and valuable connections that come from my involvement with previous jobs from home, high school, the equine industry and my internships both virtual and on location in Los Angeles.

    As for the hash tag I searched our very own #HighPointUniversity. Seeing as I am a part of the University Ambassador team it is very important for me to stay involved and aware of the current conversation going on around HPU. Right now the influencers are mainly students, prospective students and campus reps. They are tweeting and talking about current and upcoming campus events, maybe a joke or complaint here and there from a current student but mostly some very excited and positive posting from newly accepted high school seniors singing the praises of HPU!

  18. My social graph was based on my LinkedIn account. Most of my hub consisted of High Point students that are in most of my classes. I also saw some faculty members on my graph, as well. A lot of my connections overlap. The outliers I have are friends and old classmates from home. Every connection I had was important to me, and had a valuable connection, in some way. Some also included old bosses, fellow employees and others.

    I searched the hash tag #freedom. This brought about tons of tweets relating to Chris Kyle, veterans, 9/11 and many more memorable moments in history that are significant to remembering our freedoms as Americans. The influences are mainly everyday citizens that are addressing the issues, today. There is a lot of controversy about the American Sniper film. This is a burning topic on social media, today. Most tweets that I saw were supporting Chris Kyle and his family. This is important to me, and I am proud to see the support of many on social media.

  19. My network is extremely condensed on LinkedIn. A majority of my connections are in some way related to High Point University. I have a few outliers (family, employers at home) who are important because even though they are not related to my other main networks, I am extremely close with them. These outliers know about me personally (family) and professionally (employers).

    I searched the hashtag #chickfila. When looking at these tweets, I found that it was mostly average customers tweeting positive experiences they had during their dining experience. Also, people were tweeting about how excited they were for lunch or dinner at Chick-fil-A. These hashtags show a overwhelmingly positive impression of the brand.

For my social graph for LinkedIn, my main hub was full of students and teachers from High Point University, with a few connections towards the outside of the main hub if we only shared one or two connections. There was a much smaller hub of people from home that I worked with, so it was no surprise that they were completely separate from the High Point University crowd. There were also two outliers, one who is my aunt and she has no connection to anyone from my college or my hometown, and the other who I worked with at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and also has no connections with the other people I know. However, he is a valuable contact since I was a photographer for the event and he was in charge of the Media Services, so it is important that I stay connected with him. I would also consider my aunt to be a valuable contact since she lives in Connecticut and by keeping up with my work, she will keep me in mind if she has any contacts to put me in touch with.

    I chose to search twitter for hashtags related to Vans shoes, since I am a huge fan. I searched #vans and most of the results were people who were really excited about their new shoes and wanted to share them. There are malls, shoe stores, and the official vans page that are sharing tweets with this specific hashtag, which is interesting since all three of those accounts are expected to promote the products. However, you cannot tell which type of person is using the hashtag just by their tweets. Knowing the general customers of Vans shoes, I could assume what type of people are tweeting about them, but it is not possible to tell just by the 140 characters they tweet.

  21. I created a social graph for my LinkedIn accounts and had 3 distinct hubs. One was made up of High Point University connections, one was connections from high school and the largest one was from my previous two summer internships. Both internships I worked for were pharmaceutical companies so many of my connections are shared with other connections making the hub very dense. Some of the outliers include family friends and a few of the other interns I worked with who are not connected with some of the same people from the company as I am since we worked in different departments. They are all valuable contacts because our paths may cross someday down the line and we may have connections from our future employers.

    On Twitter I noticed that Pepsi is participating in a lot of live tweeting related to the end of 2014 and the upcoming Super Bowl this weekend. Pepsi has created two of its own hashtags for these live tweets, one being #livefornow which is related to ending 2014 with a bang and starting 2015 off right. The other hashtag they have been using is #halftime because they are sponsoring the Super Bowl halftime show for the 3 year in a row. #Halftime has been very beneficial for them because they are raising awareness of the halftime performer Katy Perry as well as their brand’s various Pepsi products.

  22. I based my social graph off of my LinkedIn. I had one giant cluster of High Point classmates and teachers. There were a few outliers including family members and friends from home. I noticed that all of my High Point classmates and teachers has at least one connection or more with my other connections. I realized that I don’t connect with a lot of people from my hometown on LinkedIn. I think this is because I created my LinkedIn while at school so my main focus was adding classmates and teachers.

    I searched the hashtag #modaoperandi which is an online site that allows people to preorder from high end designers’ collections straight off the runways. Most of the tweets that I saw were directly from the Moda Operandi twitter account itself as well as other fashion twitter accounts. Most of the tweets were about featured pieces that have just entered onto their website. One of the most clever tweets I saw was a picture of a pair of Del Toro flats that had emoji’s printed on them. I thought this really tied the social media and high fashion themes together that this website represents.

  23. I based my social graph off my LinkedIn page. My main hub represents people from HPU, both students and faculty but although the connections are strong within us, they may not be as effective due to the fact that we all know each other but we don't extend to other circles. The outliers in my network are people outside of HPU, mainly my family who all connects with one another, and then I have some random people from high school and my doctors.
    For the twitter hashtag I searched for #walmart because I was curious as to what people would say about it. It turns out the majority of people using it post about terrying or ridiculously funny stories that happen in a walmart.

    From weird: "Just saw a tweeker couple with a baby smoking pot an a black guy on a bike carrying a pitchfork. All set to mariachi music. #walmart"
    to making fun of people at walmart to making references: "Ladies if your not feeling very attractive....just take a stroll thru #Walmart. You'll leave feeling like a beauty queen!!" like these.
    Definately this hashtag is almost like the extension of the blog: People of Walmart and not used much to help the business or even take complaints. I also found it interesting that you not necessarily know if it is a customer who is using the hashtag,but then again how many people do not shop at walmart. It is almost as if has become a phenomenon, a meme, that eveyone knows and talks about for entertaining purposes.

  25. I don’t have too many connections on my LinkedIn yet, so I decided to do my social graph on my Facebook. I wasn’t really surprised when I saw it because the major groups were my high school, HPU, and then a collection of other people that I know through other parts of my life. The high school was the largest group because I have spent the most time there, then HPU, and then the group that has family, church friends, sports related people, and other miscellaneous people I’ve made a connection with in my life. There aren’t any people who are singled out by themselves, so I obviously don’t make too many random connections with people that I didn’t meet through someone else. The miscellaneous group is definitely still valuable because that group represent a lot of the smaller things that I have branched out and done, making them relevant connections.
    I searched twitter for the hash tag #Walmart and got pretty much what I expected. There isn’t a single type of post related to this brand name, but there are tweets that come from all different people, talking about entirely different things. There are those who promote Walmart and share stories about them, and there are those who post articles and say bad things about the brand’s name and the way that the company is run. There are also a lot of posts unrelated to both of these topics, making it impossible to identify a single type of person who would tweet about Walmart. This is because Walmart is such a massive brand and has so many parts to it, that it affects enough lives in different ways to create a massive variety of people who have something to say about them. Large brands like Walmart are going to have this kind of public action on social media, having both positive and negative contributors.

  26. My social graph is based off of LinkedIn. My main hub represents contacts from HPU, consisting of professors, classmates, and other employees. My outliers consists of family and friends. These outliers are very valuable contacts for me. They represent the family and friends that I am closest with. The people that they are connected with can be great connections for me to add in the future.

    The brand that I searched on Twitter was #Timberland. The majority of the things that showed up were links to places that you can buy a pair of timberland boots. Surprisingly, there were no influencers that were sharing the tweets related to Timberland. Everywhere I go, I see a pair of Timberlands, so I thought that would be a very active brand on Twitter.There were a few tweets that customers made referring to them wearing timberlands and saying positive things about them. This adds to brand awareness for Timberland. If one of their followers were to retweet their tweet, their brand awareness would then expand out to all of that person's followers. Surprisingly, I saw none of that with this hashtag.

  27. My LinkedIn Social graph is relatively small, however I expected that because I don’t regularly use LinkedIn. The hubs that I have are all relatively connected to each other. Almost everyone that I am connected to goes to High Point University. The only person on the outskirt of my graph was my mother. She is not a valuable contact for me in terms of LinkedIn contacts because we are not in the same field of work.

    I searched #BettyCrocker on twitter. Most people who use this hashtag are people who are discussing what they cooked or baked. People also use the hashtag to identify good recipes. I cannot identify any key influencers who use the hashtag. I think that this brand is too broad for there to be any one major influencer. Many people can use Betty Crocker products because they are easily accessible.

  28. I created my social graph for my LinkedIn account. I knew my results would be less than amazing, because I do not use the site that often. My main hub would definitely be students at High Point University. I only have 73 connections, and to be honest most of them are from school. My outlier would have to be Amber Johnson. I was president of my sorority, and she was a Traveling Leadership Consultant. I learned a lot about leadership from her, and she is a valuable contact. She is not connected with anyone else at High Point University.

    I searched Twitter for the hash tag Starbucks. Most of the tweets were from people making fun of coffee drinkers or people who were actually fans of the brand. The company has a decent presence on social media, but most of the activity was reaction from customers. Therefore, I could not identify any key influencers.

  29. I based my social graph off of Linkedin. My big hub is filled with students and faculty at High Point University! In my other hub it connected my mom and my friends at home. The High Point University hub is much stronger and bigger because within the multiple people in the hub for High Point university there are more connections through that. I do not use Linkedin a lot and my effectiveness numbers shows this. My effectiveness number is 15.4 which means my Linkedin is 7 percent effective. But, my network constraint is only a 3.97. Since this number is very close to zero it means that my hubs are open and dispersed. So, even though I have one big hub for High Point I am connected to many different people in different groups. My outliers are my friends from home and my mom and it is not that they are invaluable, but there is more value in my connections at High Point because there are more networking opportunities through High Point.

    For the twitter hashtag I decided to see what people were saying about #usairways. I found mainly negative tweets towards US airways. Specifically there are tweets about a delay and how a barbershop quartet preformed. People also complained about the legroom, and the surcharges for flight changes during the storm. The only real positive comment I found was not even about the #usairways brand but a picture that a customer took while on a US airways flight. The influencers are people who feel strongly about US airways not doing a good job with their services. These influencers are clearly prevalent because of the overwhelming negative tweets. Lastly, I noticed that there is not a lot of response from US Airways in return to all the negativity surrounding the brand on twitter.

  30. I created a social graph based off of my LinkedIn account. My hub was for the most part people that I know from HPU and teachers here. There are also some people from my high school and my high school teachers as well. My outliers are mostly kids that I know that I did not attend high school or college with. My dad and my aunt are also 2 outliers that I have. Yes I believe these outliers are valuable contacts for me because some of them are in the same line of work that I would like to go into and they could be connected to people that I would sometime like to connect with as well.

    I searched #Budweiser because the SuperBowl just happened and I feel as though most people are always in love with the Budweiser commercials and advertisements. For the most part all of the tweets are about #BringBudHome, which was their SuperBowl commercial this year with the lost puppy. A lot of people also tweeted that they were going to go adopt a puppy after watching the ad. I couldn't find any negative comments about the ad. The commercial itself which came out on YouTube before the SuperBowl was retweeted and shared by practically everyone not just on Twitter but also on Facebook. I think it was a really smart idea for Budweiser to do that because then everyone would see it on social media and then be able to see it air on TV during the game.

  31. My social graph included a couple different hubs that represented different business industries and then my peers at High Point University. I had a couple outliers who are valuable contacts that are distinguished parts of different industries in which I am not connected with besides the one person. Outliers are beneficial though!

    I searched twitter for Sprite’s brand and related hashtags, everyone being familiar with #ObeyYourThirst and #TheThirstIsMoreRealThanEver. It seems Sprite really markets toward the average joe such as the young aspiring musician or middle-aged guy playing pick up hoops in the park with his buds. When I asked my roommate what celebs she thought of when she thought Sprite, (mind you the only sport she ever watches is Oklahoma Sooner football), she said Lebron James. Lebron is a heavy influencer for the Sprite brand, even before his move back to Akron. Sprite used his transition back home as a great influence impression because #ObeyYourThirst no longer indicates drink Sprite when you’re thirsty, it becomes #ObeyYourHeart or path in life. Thirst is a physical need and so is a happy heart; therefore, #ObeyYourPassion because passion is the byproduct of purpose. Drink Sprite because you have a purpose here on this earth, just like Lebron!

  32. My Socilab social graph had three major hubs focusing on people i know from High Point, back home in New Albany, and those who have connections with my parents and other family members. I had a few outliers that represented people that I had met randomly through out my life but had no other major connections with. These outliers are extremely beneficial due to the fact that they have a completely different set of connections to explore and add to my own.

    I focused my twitter hashtag on #Oreo. Most of the tweets involving the cookie are about the different flavors that Oreo has realized or should release at some point. There are also a lot of tweets that show the use of Oreos in other types of cookies, cakes, and desserts. there were even a few that referenced the Oreo Air Jordan 4. and its use by popular NBA athletes. There were not any individuals that I would consider influencers. Just regular people commenting on how much they like the beloved cookie. I also found it a little surprising that there was pretty much no negative tweets or comments about Oreo.

  33. Having not paid that much attention to my LinkedIn, I don’t really have that wide of a network. However, I was able to see that most of my connections are those related to High Point University. The outliers were not related to my main networks, but still could be important to me because they were past employers/family members from home.

    With the Super Bowl having been a few days ago, I decided to search the hashtag #budweiser, and I was not at all surprised as to what I found. It seemed that every single tweet had something to do with their puppy commercial. Most tweets praised, while there were other that I found criticized. Regardless, the commercial had everyone talking - whether it be good or not so good which is I think what Budweiser had set out to do.

  34. I was not surprised in the least bit when analyzing my LinkedIn profile via Socilab. As I expected, the majority of my hub is centralized on High Point connections, with few outliers. The outliers that I do have present on the graph are those from home in Maryland or other such distant family members. Unfortunately, I do not seem to appear as active on LinkedIn with a larger perimeter of groupings than I wish I did, as my connections are webbed with the High Point community. When I connect with friends, I then connect with mutual friends, mutual professors, parents, etc., which accounts for why our connections are interlocked and webbed together. I hope to extend my profile and grow much more active on LinkedIn and use it to my advantage.


    Due to the recent marketing move made by Chick-fil-A, I felt compelled to search the brand’s hashtag on twitter. Of course, the majority of the tweets that came up with my search were focused upon this campaign. Just a few hours ago, one of my friends sent me a screen shot of the tweet that Chick-fil-A posted marketing this campaign of complimentary coffee for the WHOLE month of February. Talk about a wonderful deal! I know that I will certainly be getting my coffee fix this month with some nuggets on the side. It seems that the main influencers with this brand’s hashtag are consumers who are live tweeting or real time tweeting their Chick-fil-A experience. Thus, many of the tweets include images of some sort, whether that be while they are sitting in the drive-thru line or with free iced-coffee in hand. Chick-fil-A clearly has a strong presence on social media and I am going to start following their brand to see all that they do on a regular basis.

  35. I just recently created my LinkedIn account, so i dont have all that many connections as of right now. So most of my Connections are either college friends or friends from high school. I had a few outliers that represented people that I had met randomly through out my life but had no other major connections with. These outliers are extremely beneficial due to the fact that they have a completely different set of connections to explore and add to my own.

    On twitter i searched #nike. I found everything thing from upcoming shoe releases, to just average people trying to sell their shoes through twitter. most of these tweets include images of the shoes of course. I do follow the Nike brand on most social media sites, and they seem to have a strong presence on social media.

  36. I created my social graph for my Linked In. I had two main hubs, one of them was students and faculty at High Point University and the other hub was friends and parents from back home. I have two outliers in my graph, one is my boss from my internship last year and the other is a college lacrosse coach from Virginia. I would say these are still valuable contacts to me because they are from back home and are both things that I am looking into doing or the same career field.

    On twitter I searched #apple to see what kind of results that brought up. The big thing with Apple right now is their new watch that is coming out soon and how Apple is building a solar powered data command center. Every five seconds there would be at least twenty new tweets about #apple. Most of the influencers that I saw were other companies talking about how Apple was helping them out or to use Apple with their products. Overall though there was a huge mix of people posting #apple from businesses like IBM to single people online.

  37. I do not yet have a linkedin account so I wasn't able to create a social graph. but from what I have learned about linkedin. the HPU alumni can be very helpful in the further.
    On twitter I searched #loadedboards. loaded is a long boarding company and through the hashtag I was able to view a lot of things. such as new videos they have made, competitions, and information about new products. on february 28th there is a competition in San Clemente, CA. therefore through twitter I can get updates on the competition.

  38. My social graph was pretty much focused on one hub with a few outliers. I found that my main hub was High Point University, which makes sense because that is where most of my professional connections are. The second largest hub was people whom I had met at my internship in Washington, D.C. this past summer. Most of the connections there were people from the actual company with a few others that I had met at events and thru clients. Other than those two hubs I had a few outliers that didn't fit in. A few were family members, like my dad and step siblings, and a few were friends from home that I have kept in touch with from high school or have met thru mutual friends. I found the outliers to be the most interesting part of this graph because it showed me where I could grow and network.

    The twitter hashtag I searched was #Mcdonalds and what I found was extremely positive. Many people know that McDonald's just launched a new campaign called "Pay With Lovin". The campaign was announced during a super bowl commercial and the idea behind it is that McDonald's customers will be randomly selected to "Pay With Lovin". When asked all they have to do is show affection toward someone (i.e. hug, blow kisses, call a loved one and tell them you love them, etc.) and they will get their food for free. This campaign has clearly taken off on Twitter because the majority of hashtags were about this campaign and customers excitement toward it. Most of the tweets were from happy customers who had been asked to pay with love. Overall, I think it's really awesome that McDonald's launched this campaign because it is clearly doing wonders for their social media presence on Twitter.

  39. I created a social graph for my LinkedIn. My graphs had two main hubs, my contacts from high school, and my contacts from High Point University.The main outliers that I found were my family members and previous employers. These contacts are pretty valuable because my family knows a lot of people throughout many different industries, and my previous employers will have contacts within the industries that I am looking to get involved in.

    I decided to search Twitter for the hashtag for NorthFace. Most of the people who use the hashtag for the brad are all people who have gotten their jacket, or other gear from the company, and are using it and enjoying it. There don't appear to be any specific key individuals who are influencing the brand hashtag. The people using it are mainly just satisfied customers, which is a good thing for the company over all.

  40. Once I created my social graph for LinkedIn I saw that I had three hubs. I had a very large one full of all the students and faculty at High Point University. The second was all the students and faculty from my high school, while the third was all the staff from a country club I worked for in Denver. There were a few outliers and they were actually quite significant. One was my boss this summer for the commercial real estate company I worked for. A few others included coworkes from that same company yet they were not connected. These outliers are important for me because I plan to work in commercial real estate when I graduate so they are great connections to have.

    I chose Chipotle for the hashtag to research on Twitter. There were many tweets about how Chipolte's twitter was hacked recently. There were profanities used such as the F word and the N word. They received a lot of backlash for racism but it has been cleared that the site was hacked. The hashtag being used for this incident is #chipoltehacked. Aside from the recent hack, those who tweet about chipolte tend to be customers raving over the food.

  41. I do not yet utilize my LinkedIn account. Therefore I went to TouchGraph where I was able to analyze my Facebook account. It was very different than the socilab and it focused on cross-referencing my interests with those of my Facebook friends as well as local and national businesses and products that fall into those categories. This creates a specialized feed and connects me with people that share my interests that I may not have known shared them before. This creates such a great network system of people that I already know that could be useful contacts for me in the future.

    With Valentine’s Day coming up, I decided to search #hallmark on Twitter. Most of the feed consisted of people posting pictures of cards they’ve received or even ones that they made themselves. The second most popular thing that came up on the feed was jokingly bad humored cards sort of poking fun at Hallmark. This could be good or bad for the brand. It is good because people are talking about the brand and the image that they have as being bright and uplifting in their cards. It could be bad because they are making fun of the way Hallmark is and that could be seen as negative. Lastly, there were a lot of tweets about the Hallmark channel and movies that have been on TV. These all influence the brand in one way or another because they all show up on peoples’ news feeds.

  42. The social graph for my LinkedIn showed two very large clusters of people. One of them is my connections from High Point University and other is local connections from my home down of High Point. There is a smaller cluster of people from a church I use to go to. I have quite a few outliers but the only one I could see as an asset for me would be an art professor that I use to have.
    I searched #toms on Twitter and most of the posts were from people that wear Toms shoes. There was also a post from Childrens International posting about Toms giving shoes away and Toms themselves posting pictures of their shoes.
